Thom Uber and I were married on September 21, 2009. It was a happy time for both of us. We met December 15, 2001 and I knew immediately that there was something truly special about him. Our love has grown over the years and so when the California Supreme Court ruled that we could in fact get married we seized that opportunity immediately. And for two reasons. Namely, that we love each other, but also because we knew that Proposition 8 would be on the ballot and if it passed the opportunity for us to marry would be lost.
So we got our paperwork in order and headed to the Beverly Hills Courthouse where we made it official. I cannot possibly express what a joyful day it was for us to be recognized as married in the eyes of the State. During the summer months we campaigned hard for Barack Obama, but increasingly we became concerned about the amounts of money being spent by the pro-Proposition 8 forces. We contributed some money and worked hard through the United Democratic Headquarters to help defeat the Proposition.
Election night was just such a joyous event. I laughed and cried tears of joy when they announced that Barack had won! And then the reality of Proposition 8 settled in! Truthfully, I was pretty closeted about my homosexuality. I was always afraid that people would think of me as the gay guy instead of Bill who happens to be gay. I did not want to be judged. Anyhow, silly in retrospect. It was time for me to come out and voice my opinion.
Thom was my inspiration. He said we have to protest. I was a little unsure for a brief moment and then instead of wallowing in the defeat we got out there along with thousands of you. It was a cathartic experience for us. We did television interviews, marched till we barely could take another step and shouted until our voices were hoarse. We protested and hoped that the Supreme Court would help us!
So here we are. The Supreme Court has ruled. They were our hope. We are still legally married, but now two men or two women in love with each other are denied the right granted Thom and I last summer. We are very, very, very sad. We are grateful that we are still looked at as married in the eyes of the state, but sad for all of those who cannot now marry. It is a tragedy. We hope that this decision will one day be decided once and for all by the United States Supreme Court. I am just not sure that this will happen for a quite a long time.
