Last year, at this time, we Democrats were celebrating a spectacular national victory in winning the Presidency and control of both houses of the Congress. President Obama campaigned as the candidate of change. He would avoid the pettiness of partisan politics and work with the community to address our long neglected national problems and end the era of Bush-Cheney. While President Obama has effectively changed and ended major Bush policies at the cabinet level, his accomplishments in working to get Congress to act are excruciatingly slow. Read more ... Saturday 15 August 2009 The President's Column ~ Michael Lee, Club President As we enter the political silly season during the August Congressional recess, let's keep our focus on the need for true health care reform. President Obama recognizes the need for reform based on three core principles: (1) reduce costs, (2) guarantee choice, and (3) ensure quality care for all. The present system simply is too expensive and still does not cover 46 million Americans. Millions of Americans who are employed with big companies are within a layoff notice of losing coverage for themselves and their families. Governor Howard Dean has identified a rising problem in that Americans with health insurance cannot rely on it if they get sick and require more than routine office visits and medication. The percentage of small business employees being offered health coverage declined from 67% to 38% from 1995-2008. Under the current policy, private and public spending on health care now totals more than 15% of our gross domestic product and, within a few years, it is likely to be more than 20% of GDP. Sunday 07 June 2009 Proposition 8: A Personal Perspective ~ Bill HacketThom Uber and I were married on September 21, 2009. It was a happy time for both of us. We met December 15, 2001 and I knew immediately that there was something truly special about him. Our love has grown over the years and so when the California Supreme Court ruled that we could in fact get married we seized that opportunity immediately. And for two reasons. Namely, that we love each other, but also because we knew that Proposition 8 would be on the ballot and if it passed the opportunity for us to marry would be lost. Read more ... Go to page
